The National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) interviewed PhD student Yeorgia Argirou in honour of World Women in Science Day.
Yeorgia is a student in NIAB’s Cambridge Crop Science division working on hybrid wheat. Her PhD focuses on using wheat with genes from ancestral species to assess whether the increased genetic diversity has an effect on yield in hybrids. She is also doing a transcriptomics experiment to look at the changes in gene expression in hybrid wheat (https://www.niab.com/about/people/miss-yeorgia-argirou ).
Yeorgia highlights that over the years wheat yields have stopped rising and this is why her research combining genetic diversity and hybrid wheat, will “hopefully lead to increased yields in the future”.
