With winter wheat crops growing away quickly and variable weather windows for spraying, it is the last chance for growers to complete grassweed programmes, before both weeds and crops pass optimal growth stages, says Dow AgroSciences.
Stuart Jackson, herbicide specialist at Dow AgroSciences says: “While the temptation is to rush to get the sprayer out of the shed as soon as a dry spell is forecast, operators should be careful not to compromise on effective application. Choose the right nozzle, spray quality, forward speed and boom height for your target weeds to ensure spring weed control applications are effective.
“Pay attention to growth stages -both of crop and target weeds – to ensure you’re not putting more pressure on a product than is necessary. The bigger the weed, the harder it is to control,” Mr Jackson continues.
Despite the pressure to get the spraying done it’s important to apply when both crops and weeds are actively growing, ideally two to three days before and after application.
UNITE is effective on blackgrass up to growth stage (GS) 24. Apply in 130-150 l/ha of water using a fine to medium quality spray. Late germinating and small blackgrass plants that have not tillered may benefit from a lower water volume of 130 l/ha using a fine spray, to ensure optimal coverage.
