A re-formulated version of a previously approved grassland herbicide, Triad, has now received registration for use, giving farmers greater flexibility in tackling weeds in new sown leys.
With increasing numbers of farmers wanting to establish nitrogen-fixing clover leys as a result of rising fertiliser costs, Simon Francis, commercial technical manager at FMC, explains that the new product, now sold as Triad SX, will be particularly beneficial as a tool to help successful crop establishment.
“Annual weeds like chickweed can smother grass leys, particularly those containing clover, which can make it difficult for the crop to establish in its first year,” he says.
“As part of the solution to this Triad SX can effectively control a range of problematic annual weeds, allowing farmers to get the grass off to a good start and helping strong sward development to suppress further weed growth.”
The registration of Triad SX also comes at a time when the number of clover-safe products available to growers is diminishing.
Welcome for effective clover safe products
Mr Francis explains that around 50% of all newly sown leys in the UK are thought to contain clover, so the registration of Triad SX will be welcomed as there is a real need for effective clover-safe products.
“The new version of Triad comes as a granular product, formulated with SX ® technology, which makes it easy to use and allows a reduced wash out of the spray tank compared to the previous tablet formulation,” he says.
“The new product’s label is very similar to the old one, with an application period between 1st March and 31st October, which will provide a long window in which to control annual weeds.
“Those who have experience with the old version of the product will be very familiar with how to use Triad SX,” he adds
“As with all clover ‘safe’ products, it’s important to check the growth of clover in the sward following application, so please speak to your agronomist and read the label for information on how to use Triad SX safely and effectively,” he says.
